Jovial January has been a month of happiness all around. It is the time when our children welcomed the new year with new promises and resolutions after the winter break. January has been another month of learning and revising the concepts with the maximum participation in different activities like Intra and inter-school competitions, which not only honed their skills but also gave them a platform to showcase their talents. The universal theme ‘ I am truthful ’ proved to be a big support for the young minds with the help of which the value of being truthful and honest could be inculcated well. The students happily narrated their personal experiences during the discussion time in the morning assembly sessions promising to be truthful and dedicated always. The dynamic Suncitizens displayed their ardour and passion by celebrating Christmas on a virtual platform. The students commenced their morning assemblies everyday with beautiful thoughts and enriching words. They enjoyed reading the NIE and sharing numerous facts and regular updates about various important events like Republic day and other competitions.
Students started their learning of Mathematics through a recall knowledge session. Percentages were introduced. Students gave various examples where they see Percentages in real life like – Report Card, Marks, Humidity and Banks, etc. Students understood the concept of Percentage, its symbol, and the relation between Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages through the Place Value Chart. Students also practiced the following concepts:
Practice sums and worksheets were given to strengthen their knowledge on Percentages. SCIENCESolids, liquids and gases Air and Water The chapter solids, liquids and gases concluded with the understanding of the property of expansion and contraction of matter through an activity. The hands-on bottle and balloon experiment helped the students understand the expansion and contraction when placed in hot and cold water. In the next lesson Air and Water, the discussion started with the students sharing their knowledge about the importance of atmosphere. With the help of a video, they understood the different layers of atmosphere, their properties and importance. To understand about the various properties of air like air occupies space, it exerts pressure etc they conducted different activities like immersing an inverted glass in a bowl of water and feeling the force against their applied force, trying to inflate a balloon in a bottle attached on the neck of an empty bottle and by pushing the water in and out in a syringe or dropper. They also understood the soluble and insoluble impurities of water by trying to dissolve salt and tea leaves in water and then trying to separate them by passing through a strainer. All these activities made the learning fun and exciting for the students. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gzg4myWAEA SOCIAL SCIENCEA map says to you, “Read me carefully, follow me closely, doubt me not…. I am the Earth in the palm of your hand.” – Beryl Markham Ch. Globe and Map Concept Initiation was done by giving a raw map to students where they were asked to mark few places/landforms. After discussing the various features of a map, the students were motivated to differentiate between a political and physical map. Further, a virtual activity was done where they identified the exact location of Mount Everest, Amazon River, and Trans-Siberian Railway. With this, they understood the importance of signs and symbols used for various physical features on the map. The importance of a scale in a map was also demonstrated in the class. The difference between the map and the globe was also discussed in which many students added their understanding. Ch-Latitudes and Longitudes Students learnt the difference between Latitude and Longitude as part of the introductory class discussion. Applying their understanding they also learnt to identify few locations on the map. They also understood about equator, the lines of latitudes and longitudes, IDL, time zones, hemispheres, heat zones and Prime Meridian that were discussed in the class. An illustrative VUCA worksheet was attempted by students to understand and practice the concepts learnt. The Republic Day GK Quiz was also conducted where the students attempted an MCQ quiz on “Quizzes”. Interactive discussions, Powerpoint presentations, real-life connections, See think and wonder strategy, live worksheets, and visual snippets were the various methodologies used this month. https://www.liveworksheets.com/io2433322mg https://www.liveworksheets.com/worksheets/en/Social_Studies/Latitude_and_Longitude/Latitude_and_Longitude_bk1558713db ICT“Learning never exhausts the mind.” In the progression of the Scratch 2.0 programming language, the students prepared several small programs such as taking the input from the user finding its length, use of mathematical operators to compare digits. They also learnt how to create new variables and a list. Besides this, they practiced several small programs given in the ‘lab session’ of the book. As part of the next topic, students started their basic understanding of MS Excel. They learned how to select cells, enter numbers as text, date, and time, ways to change the cell contents, use undo and redo features, and much more.
